Signs of Co-Occurring Conditions

Dual diagnosis is the term used to describe a person who is suffering from co-occuring conditions. This includes a substance abuse disorder along with some type of mental illness. The fact is, a dual diagnosis can involve any type of addictive substance combined with any type of mental illness. The symptoms of these conditions vary quite a bit from one person to another.

Mental Illness and Substance Addiction/Abuse

Those who suffer from any type of substance abuse disorder are much more likely to experience specific types of mental illness than other people. The illness that is most commonly associated and seen with a substance use disorder is bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression. Approximately 33 percent of all individuals who have a diagnosable mental disorder also suffer from some type of substance abuse issue. For those who have a serious mental health condition, the likelihood of a substance use disorder is even higher at 50 percent.

Symptoms of Co-Occurring Conditions

The specific signs of a person with substance abuse or addiction and mental health disorders can be different from one person to another. In most cases, it is dependent on the type of substance being used. However, there are some general symptoms that are seen in these individuals. Some of the most common are listed here.

  • Intense cravings for a specific substance.
  • Spending a large amount of time trying to obtain the substance.
  • Continual use of the substance in various high-risk situations.
  • Continual use of the substance even when the intake results in serious school or work-related, social or personal problems.
  • The inability to control the amount or the rate of intake of a substance.

Understanding dual diagnosis conditions is something that can be challenging. In most cases, it will be a doctor that has to diagnose this issue. Being informed and aware of the problems and symptoms associated with the condition is the best way to ensure it is addressed in a timely manner.

The Career and Generous Contributions of David Johnson

David Johnson began his career by earning a BBA from the University of West Georgia in Management and MIS and an MBA in Computer Information Systems from the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, part of the Georgia State University system. He has worked his way up since then to become a partner in Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP in St. Croix and Strategic Link Consulting, which focuses on providing consulting services for an international clientele.

Past Positions

Before becoming a partner at both of these prestigious companies, Johnson held a number of other important positions. These include VP of Client Services at TranDotCom Solutions, LLC, VP of Mansell Group, Director of HR and Facilities at Neovest, Director of Operations at Intellimedia Commerce, Business Manager at United Healthcare, and Regional Project Administrator at Earth Tech. Holding these positions put Johnson in a position to utilize his many skills in the risk management, information technology, marketing, and offshore call center sectors.

Awards and Recognition

Johnson has received a variety of awards over his years in consulting. These include a 2006 Kappa Sigma Fraternity commendation for distinguished service and recognition as the Purdue for New Georgia Volunteer of the Week, among others.

The St. Croix Educational Program

With support from other leaders in his company, Johnson decided several years ago to help fund the construction of a new, state-of-the-art building at the University of West Georgia with the goal of housing the entire college under one roof. The building will be the new home of Richards College of Business and will feature flexible learning spaces, student learning labs, conference rooms, and expanded administrative and faculty spaces.

Johnson’s generous donation to the University of West Georgia for the construction of this new building shows his commitment to helping other students learn and fostering community engagement. Given that Johnson himself attributes his own success as a business leader to the educational foundation he received at UWG, it makes sense that he would wish to give back to his alma mater and help other students meet their educational and career goals.
